Witchmark becomes highest scoring B Corp distillery in England

Founding Wiltshire Marque member Witchmark Distillery has been named England’s highest scoring B Corp distillery, recognising its commitment to sustainability and ethical business practices.

B Corp businesses are companies verified by B Lab to meet high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability.

To achieve their B Corp status, Witchmark has been working tirelessly to minimise environmental impact, ensure a sustainable supply chain, embrace innovative technology, and engage their whole team with the mission. Their location in the heart of Wiltshire at Fonthill Bishop has been crucial to this, and sustainable principles are at the core of everything they do. 

Measures they’ve taken include sourcing barley from Fonthill Farm; a local, regenerative agriculture system that supports biodiversity; generating solar energy from a 100kW array on the warehouse roof; and powering the stills with bio-liquid propane gas recovered from eco-fuel production from vegetable oils (40% more sustainable than fossil fuels). The distillery applies state-of-the-art heat recovery systems in the production process to reduce energy waste in the distillation process.

Witchmark has also implemented a circular waste management system, sending spent grains, botanicals, pot ale and lees to a local anaerobic digestor for energy production. Their packaging has the best possible environmental credentials, including using 100% recycled glass bottles with minimal environmental impact and they support the community via partnerships, working with organisations that align with Witchmark’s values and mission (including the Wiltshire Marque!).
